Report on the Lowell Light and Power special board meeting on September 18, 2012.
This meeting was held to make a public announcement of the decision the LL&P board had made in a closed meeting regarding the two apprentice workers who were fired.
Members present were: Chairman Greg Canfield, Vice-Chairman Andrew Johnston, Perry Beachum, Tina Siciliano-Cadwallader and General Manager Greg Pierce. Absent was board member Maryalene LaPonsie.
Beachum took the floor stating the same reasons for termination with each worker: Their training was put on hold twice due to evaluations by their supervisor that indicated their might be a danger to themselves or other workers.
That supervisor was present at the meeting and questioned whether all of the worker's reviews had been used. He was told that any questions should have been brought up during earlier meetings and that no discussion would be allowed at this meeting.
Johnston stated that because we live in an "At Will" state, management has the right to terminate a worker without cause, so their actions were legal and justified.
Johnston also stated that they had investigated the terminations and that he was satisfied that it was appropriate.
The board voted unanimously that the firings were justified.
A worker told me that no employees were interviewed during the "investigation". I would like to hear from any employees who wish to opine on this matter.

Johnston stated that their decision was legal and justified, well it might be legal but not justified. How can they be satisfied in firing the two apprentice when they didn't interview the supervisor who did weekly evaluations? And what happened to the evaluations??? This sounds bad at every level. According the apprentice supervisor they were doing a good job and should not have been fired! I wonder if LL&P did this because the workers joined the union? And now LL&P claims they have to sub-contract because they don't have enough workers but they did when they employed the apprentice! I seen them install transmission line just last fall but now they sub-contract that job out to Kent Power. This is exactly what the workers was contract negotiations with LL&P. LL&P wants to be able to sub-contract the workers jobs. I personally want our own workers to do the work and not somebody that doesn't care about our town!

I like the fact that the board would not allow the supervisor to talk at this meeting. Why did they not allow any discussion. This meeting decided two peoples careers and if there was pertinent information on the matter then the board should have listen to it and taken it into consideration.
